Registration at city hall

Register at arrival 

As an international student, staying for more then 90 days, you're required to register at the Town or City hall of the municipality where you reside. This should be done as soon as possible after you’ve received your PXL registration papers (in Dutch: 'inschrijvingsattest').

Bring your registration paper from PXL, ID and/or passport, housing contract, health insurance proof and passport photos. Mention how long you are staying and if you are an Erasmus exchange student or a degree student.

If you're staying in Diepenbeek: Town Council, Dorpsstraat 14, BE-3590 Diepenbeek. Check the website.

If you're staying in Hasselt: Administrative Services, Registration Office for Foreigners, Limburgplein 1, BE-3500 Hasselt. Make an appointment online or by calling +3211239000.

Are you a non-EU citizen staying for more then 90 days?

  • On your first appointment: you will first receive an ‘annex 15’. This is a certificate provisionally covering his stay in Belgium. This document can be used for formal administration like opening bank account, health insurance, student job... 
  • A local police officer will verify your address. When this is done, you'll receive an e-mail from the city hall asking you to make an appointment to request your residency permit (A-card) 
  • On your 2nd appointment: you formally request your residency permit and pay approx. 22 euros.  
  • You will be informed by e-mail when the A-card is ready and you can pick it up at the city hall (without appointment).

Report your departure

You must also report your departure. The end of your stay will be registered.

EU citizen 

If you were staying in Hasselt, send an e-mail to vreemdelingendienst@hasselt.be with following info:

  • first name en last name
  • birth date
  • home country 
  • adress in Belgium
  • date of departure
  • address in home country 

non-EU citizen

Before going back home, you have to report your departure and hand in your residency permit. Take a copy of residency permit before giving it back. You'll receive documents you may need to submit in your home country in order to re-register back there.
