Money Matters

Bank account

If you keep using the bank account in your home country, please contact your local bank about transaction costs in Belgium for this account. If you only have a debit card, make sure it is a ‘Maestro’ debit card. Otherwise bring a credit card.

You can set up a Belgian bank account in with a digital bank such as Wise or Revolut.

For some countries you can already set it up before arrival in Belgium. If this is not supported for your country, you can set it up with your Belgian address and by uploading your Belgian student visa or residency permit.

Make sure to open a Belgian IBAN account number so you receive local bank details: BE + 16digits. You can also order a debit card for payments, online purchases and ATM withdrawels.

Alternatively, you can open an account at a physical bank in Belgium (BNP Parisbas-Fortis, Belfius, ING, KBC,...).

You will need the following documents:

  • a valid passport or identity card
  • proof of enrolment at PXL
  • a copy of your rental contract

Additional documents for non-EU citizens staying over 3 months:

  • written confirmation of registration in the foreigners register (done at the city hall)
  • proof of scholarship or proof of solvency
  • visa

Student Employment

Doing a student job can be a nice way to earn some extra pocket money, but employment laws can be tricky. Student Services is at your disposal if you want more info about the conditions to work when you're an international student in Belgian.
