Insurance
You are required to have adequate insurance coverage that includes personal accident and medical expenses. In case of mobility within the EU, the participant's national health insurance with the European Health Insurance Card also provides basic insurance coverage for the stay in another EU country. However, this basic insurance coverage may be insufficient, especially if repatriation or special medical interventions are needed or in case of international mobility. For such cases, supplementary private health insurance may be required. For further information, please contact your health insurance company.
Visa
Staff members who are EU citizens, do not need to obtain a visa in order to enter the country. Non-EU citizens and citizens of countries outside Norway, Iceland, and Lichtenstein, have to apply in advance for a visa to Belgium. The International Office at PXL can assist the incoming Erasmus+ staff members during the visa application process and provides them with all necessary documents. Visa issuance may take up to 3 months. For more information, please contact the Belgian embassy or Belgian consulate in your country or a neighbouring country and check the website of Belgian Foreign Affairs.
Directions
Belgium has 2 main airports offering passenger services: Brussels Airport (Zaventem) and Charleroi Airport (Brussels South).
For long distance travel, the best way is to fly to Brussels Airport Zaventem and then to Hasselt by train. At Brussels Airport Zaventem you have a railway station directly at the airport. Brussels Airport’s train station is equipped with access gates. As a result, you can only enter or leave the station using the square bar code (QR Code) on your train ticket. A standard ticket is valid for all trains at any time of the day on the chosen date and route. Timetables and tickets can be found on the website of the national railway company or in the app.
If you’re arriving late at night, you can take a taxi to Hasselt or stay overnight in Brussels. Be aware that taking a taxi from Brussels Airport Zaventem to Hasselt can be expensive. It’s recommended to make a reservation in advance: Airportservice Hasselt (+-€100 one way).
From Charleroi airport you can take a public bus (TEC) to the nearest railway station. More info: By train and bus to Brussels South Charleroi Airport | SNCB. Another option is to take a private shuttle bus to ‘Brussel South’ railway station or a private taxi service.
If you’re from a neighboring country, check if you can get to Hasselt without flying, by international train or Flixbus. At Hasselt railway station, you can take a taxi (+-€8) or public bus 'De Lijn' (+-€2,5) to your hotel or the PXL-campus (addresses of the campuses).
Google Maps gives you access to the timetables of both buses and trains.
